How It Began
Jon grew up on a diet of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He-Man, and other iconic figures of the late 80s and early 90s, his youthful imagination leaped between the worlds of Power Rangers and the like.
However, things took a dark turn around the age of 14 or 15. Two instances of being mugged while walking home from school left a mark on him - one instance involved a physical confrontation and the other a more psychological ordeal, surrounded by a group of individuals.
Driven by a growing need to navigate the streets without constantly glancing over his shoulder, Jon delved into the diverse realms of martial arts. The allure of Bruce Lee led him to the doors of Jeet Kune Do Club, conveniently located nearby. Despite the proximity, summoning the courage to enter took two years.
Facing the entrance, Jon battled preconceived notions fuelled by cinematic portrayals, where martial arts seemed akin to the prowess of Jean-Claude Van Damme. Dispelling these illusions became a mantra for Jon, one he imparts to new students—that the smoke and mirrors in their minds differ vastly from the reality within. Beyond the threshold, he discovered a community of ordinary individuals, much like himself, engrossed in the pursuit of an extraordinary art.
In 2002, Jon first started and fell in love with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Now, after over two decades of dedication, what started as a means of self-empowerment has blossomed into a way of life, even defining his livelihood. The impact of that initial step transcended mere routine—it fundamentally altered the trajectory of Jon's life.
